Men’s Match Report:
Stanmore D v Loddon A
by Brad Rope

Loddon Men’s Tennis Team started off their first ever Norwich City League campaign with a trip away to Stanmore Tennis Club. Everyone was looking forward to getting underway and luckily the weather was on our side after a preceding miserable couple of days.

The partnerships were made up of Bradley Rope/Jon Green and James Preston/Richard Stride. With a few nerves in the air and having to adapt to a new court, the teams had a bit of a rude awakening to competitive tennis with James/Rich starting off 8-0 down and Brad/Jon 6-2 down in the first half of the first matches. The teams did not let that get to them though with both teams fighting back to split both of their second halves 4-4 resulting in Brad/Jon losing 10-6 and James/Rich losing 12-4.

After a short break, the teams were back on the courts for their second matches and with the confidence gained from the second half of the previous matches, James/Rich got off to a great start with a hold of serve followed by a break. Sadly, in the third game, the match was to be cut short as Neil Bradford of Stanmore D unfortunately injured himself stretching out for a shot and was unable to continue. This meant that due to James/Rich being 2-0 up, we took a 16-0 win in the match.

On the other court, Brad/Jon had a difficult start being 4-0 down but with James/Rich supporting from the clubhouse or the ‘Royal Box’ as described by Rich, they were able to take 7 of the next 12 games to finish the match with a 9-7 loss.

Every game won proved to be vital as the scores ended with a tight 33-31 win to Loddon. Of course, the result was dependent on a stroke of luck for Loddon and misfortune for Stanmore D so everyone at the club would like to send their best wishes to Neil and we hope he is able to get himself back on the courts as soon as possible. But to end on a positive note, a huge congratulations to the team and Coach Paul for the first win and hopefully this will be the start of a great season!
